Depression is a set of very frequently occurring symptom that may appear at any time during a man´s life. The research projects carried out by Tehran University of Medicine have proved that the results of treatment of patients with the a pure saffron extract are at the same level as the results of treatment of patients with antidepressants with the only difference – no side effects were observed in the patients treated with saffron. Similar experiments have been carried out by other universities too and showed similar results, i.e. we can deemed the effect to be scientifically proved. Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world and, in addition to its traditional value as a food additive, it proved its potential in clinic studies in the treatment of depression and in oncologic diseases (Rios et al, 1996,. The value of saffron (dried stigmas of Crocus sativus L.) is determined by the presence of three main secondary metabolites: Crocin and its derivatives that are responsible for colour; picrocrocin - responsible for taste and safranal responsible for smell and has therapeutic effects. In fact, saffron contains more than 150 evaporable aromatic compounds. Besides, it contains also lots of non-evaporable active components such as for example: carotenoids, including zeaxanthin, lycopene, ß-carotene and polysaccharides.

Saffron belongs to the Iridaceae family and as a therapeutic plant it is useable in the treatment of depression, nervous system disorders, cramps and asthmas (Rios et al., 1996; Abe and Saito, 2000; Abdullaev, 2002). It reduces renal colic, stomachache and relieves the tension (Rios et 1996; Hosseinzadeh a Younes, 2002). In the traditional Persian medicine, saffron is used for the treatment of depression, anxiousness and insomnia (Hosseinzadeh a Younes, 2002; Karimi et al, 2001; Akhondzadeh .et al, 2004;Noorbala et al 2005).

Composition of 1 pill:

15.0 mg of the extract from saffron

Composition: the extract from saffron (Crocus sativus L.), Flocel, maltodextrin, anticaking substance: magnesium stereate.

Dosage: 2 x 1 pill per day - in the morning and in the evening before the meal. 

In the case of severe depression, we recommend to take it as a cure; outside the depression period, its parallel taking is possible without the risk of the occurrence of addictive side-effects. In the case of insomnia, take 2 pills in the evening before going to bed.

Warning: It is not suitable for children under the age of 12. Do not exceed the determined daily dose. It must not be taken as a substitute of varied diet. Store out of reach of small children, in a dry and dark place, at the temperature of 25°C.
